A man has been shot dead by police after he attempted to attack them on Bourke Street in Melbourne this afternoon.

“We are treating this as a terrorism incident,” Victorian police chief commissioner Graham Ashton said on Friday night.

“We now know a bit more about the identity of that person. Initially, that person didn’t have any identification on them but we believe we now have confirmation of the identity of that person.”

One of the stabbing victims died at the scene while two are in hospital.
Video appears to show a man wielding a weapon and attacking a group of police officers about 4.20pm on Friday.
The confrontation occurred moments after a car burst into flames near the intersection of Swanston Street, in the heart of the CBD.

The suspect has been taken to hospital in a critical condition under police guard.
A number of people are being treated for stab wounds, police said in an updated statement.
The public has been urged to avoid the area, with hundreds of police officers and emergency services on scene.
Witness are being urged to come forward to police at Melbourne West Station.
