Amphipolis: Geneticists and Geophysicists take over

Cultural Ministry General Secretary L. Mendoni warns that science should not be rushed

Culture Ministry Secretary General Lina Mendoni said that the Culture Ministry is currently conducting laboratory work on the skeleton that was found at the ancient tomb at Kasta Hill. Scientists will be responsible for the processing of genetic material.

The main focus is on the skeleton and excavation work is believed to have almost concluded for the time being. Another area that is currently active is the geophysical survey that is being conducted.

She warned that the work into the tomb cannot be rushed. Things need to mature and study needs to take time. Culture Minister Konstantinos Tasoulas wanted Greek scientists to conduct the studies processing the genetic material. “Thank God, we have good human resources,” she said. It is still unclear as to whether a DNA test would take place. This would be decided on following the genetic material.

Following the excavation work, Ms. Mendoni said that the ancient tomb found in the area is an opportunity to consider a model of sustainable, moderate growth that will keep the natural environment intact and will enable residents and visitors to enjoy the area.
