Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has chosen Binali Yildirim, the current minister of transport, maritime and communications, as its presumptive new leader in a closed-vote that will be formalised on Sunday.
The AKP’s new leader will be elected at the party’s extraordinary convention on May 22 in Ankara. In the meantime, Erdoğan will hold his last weekly meeting with outgoing Prime Minister Davutoğlu on May 19, his spokesperson said at a press conference.
Current Premier Ahmet Davutoglu will formally resign once results of the party vote are official and Yildirim will then begin forming a new government.
