Anti-authoritarian groups throw Molotov cocktails during Grigoropoulos anniversary rally

About 6,000 police officers will patrol the city center

Episodes broke out on the rally for the anniversary of the murder of Alexis Grigoropoulos with a group of about 30 people throwing stones and other objects to the police outside the rectory of the University of Athens, while a kiosk was burned.

The main rally organized by anti-authoritarian groups started in 18:00 and is still in progress with members of the groups throwing Molotov cocktails at police.

The police increased the number of officers on duty today due to the anniversary of the police killing a teenager, Alexis Grigoropoulos, seven years ago.

Grigoropoulos was shot down by a police officer seven years ago at Exarchia, center of Athens.

A rally was in honor of Alexis Grigoropoulos was organized by students who gathered at 12:00 at the center of Athens and ended at 16:15 with no incidents being recorded.

About 6,000 police officers will patrol the city center and a helicopter of the Hellenic Police will fly over the area to prevent from breaking out any violent episodes.

Yesterday, episodes broke out at Exarhia with members of anti-authoritarian groups throwing Molotov coctails cocktails at police and one Portuguese tourist injured while passing by in the area.

Similar measures are planned in other cities of Greece.
