Key witness claims to have information on murder of Greek investigative journalist

Giolias, a Greek investigative journalist, was shot approximately 15 times at close range outside his home in Ilioupoli, Athens in July 2010.

Newsroom March 21 10:06

The investigation about an assassination plot code-named “Pythia” against former Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis, which was revealed in 2011, has brought to light new evidence with regard to another unsolved case, the assassination of journalist Sokratis Giolias.

Giolias, a Greek investigative journalist, was shot approximately 15 times at close range outside his home in Ilioupoli, Athens in July 2010. Although the identities of the gunmen remain unknown, the weapons used were linked to previous attacks by the Sect of Revolutionaries, the deadly ultra leftist terrorist group that also claimed responsibility for the crime.

Now, a key witness who has been called by investigating magistrate Dimitris Foukas to testify on his involvement in “Pythia” case claims that he has information on Giolias assassination.

Specifically, the witness, who was allegedly part of the team that was tailing the one time Greek Prime Minister, claims that the people who approached him and asked him to watch Karamanlis were members of the Sect terrorist group. Moreover, he also says that he has information on the identity of Giolias murderers.

This revealing testimony is currently being evaluated by the competent authorities, as it comes from a prisoner who has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and his motives may be questionable.
