Magnitude 6.1 quake in Lefkada, leaves two dead (pics)

Early reports of one death from the earthquake that struck Lefkada at 9.10 p.m. this morning

protothema.gr confirmed reports that two women have lost their lives in the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that struck Lefkada at 9.10 a.m. on Tuesday. The first woman died south of the island at the village of Ponti in Vasiliki and the village of Athani, southwest of the island.

Citizens Protection representative Dimitris Georgoulopoulos confirmed the death of the woman at Ponti, speaking with protothema.gr. The woman lost her life after a huge rock boulder struck a wall of her house down following a landslide triggered by the earthquake. She died after a fatal blow to the head.

Protothema.gr was also told from regional authority  Dionysis Halikias that another woman had lost her life at Athani.

Other sources speak of a woman seriously injured at the village of Athani, near the quake’s focal point.

Lefkadapress.gr reports that four injured people have been taken to hospital so far as a result of injuries from the earthquake. These are an 88-year-old woman from Pinakohori, a boy aged 10 from Lygia, a 45-year-old man from Lefkada and another boy from Vasiliki, aged 12.
