Mitsotakis: Tsipras knows he will lose

ND leader said his participation in the Bilderberg meeting was nothing special

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of Greece’s main opposition party New Democracy (ND) said the plans of Greek PM Alexis Tsipras to introduce a proportional representation electoral system to parliament was ‘an admission of his defeat’.

In an interview to TV station ‘Star Channel’, Mitsotstakis underlined that changing the electoral system to proportional representation was ‘a crime’, saying that in the current political circumstances changes in the electoral law and cancelling the 50 seat bonus to the first party is commensurate to ‘planting a bomb at the foundations of future government stability’. ND leader accused Tsipras of wanting to implement ‘a recipe of complete lack of governance to deny the majority rule of New Democracy’ when he left power. He pledged to open the discussion on the electoral law once his party was in government. ‘Proportional representation creates more problems than it solves. It is a tactical move by Tsipras who knows he will lose’, said Mitsotakis, while he added that he has tabled a proposal for Greeks living abroad to be eligible to vote, something the Greek PM had blocked and must answer for. Mitsotakis reiterated his position on the need to lower taxes, while he also replied to his participation in the Bilderberg meeting, saying it was nothing more than a gathering of politicians, journalists and businesspeople.
