Agreements have been reached this week between the board of the Athens War Museum and regional authorities for Lamia to get its own Museum of Modern Greek History.
The establishment of the museum, according to a memorandum of cooperation signed by the museum board and authorities, is to mark the 200 anniversary of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.
Exhibits at the museum will help preserve the historical Greek Revolution in the region, as well as attract many tourists to Lamia.
Kostas Bakoyannis, Central Greece’s Governor, said that the creation of the new museum will “preserve collective memory in a region that played a leading role in shaping modern Greek history.”
Authorities are working on gathering items for the exhibits such as authentic weapons, uniforms, artefacts and flags as well as special film footage, documenting Greece’s plight for freedom from the Ottoman Empire.
