One dead and five injured in powerful blast in Athens (videos-photos)

Injured people transfererd to hospital out of danger

A 38-year-old womaan was killed and five others were injured after a powerful explosion occurred at a fast food store of the “Everest” chain located on Victorias Square, in Athens, Thursday just before 9.30am. The body of the woman, who was the accountant at the store was recovered by fire fighters from the besement where she was reportedy trapped after the blast. Four of the injured people were transferred to the G. Gennimatas hospital and the fifth one to the 401 Military Hopsital. The blast caused a fire in the store’s basement, while police have cordoned off the area as 8 fire engines and 20 fire fighters are on the scene. According to one eyewitness, who spoke to protothema.gr, the explosion was huge, and panic ensued. “I was sitting at my office and when the blast happened all of us were shaking. They told an explosion had occurred at the store’s basement from a gas tank”, he said. Some sources say the explosion was caused during welding works in the basement.
