The United Nations expresses its deep sorrow for the shipwreck off the coast of Chios

It’s a reminder of the dangers faced by refugees and migrants every day at the hands of smugglers as they seek a better life, said Stefan Duzharik

Stefan Duzharik, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, reported on the shipwreck northeast of Chios, which cost the lives of three children, during the regular press briefing at the international organisation’s headquarters in New York.

“Our colleagues at the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) are deeply saddened by the news of the shipwreck in the Aegean, where the deaths of three young girls, aged 5 to 10, were reported off the coast of Chios, Greece. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees today reported another horrific shipwreck near Lampedusa, Italy, where the death of nine people was confirmed,” Mr. Duzharik stated.

The spokesperson for Antonio Guterres added that this is a “reminder of the dangers faced by refugees and migrants every day at the hands of smugglers as they seek a better life.”
