New immigrant boat disaster off Samos – One dead and 25 rescued

The shipwrecked people sent sos through the 112 help number

A man was recovered dead and 25 other people were rescued from a semi-submerged dinghy carrying migrants in the sea area of Agios Isidoros northwest of Karlovasos, Samos.

The Coast Guard was alerted on Sunday morning (28/04) when the castaways sent out a sos via the 112 help number.

The Coast Guard rushed to the scene and carried out a rescue operation, recovering the lifeless body of a man and rescuing the 25 stranded migrants. The rescued people were taken to the port of Vathios and are in good health.

According to the statement of the rescuers, ten other people were on board the lifeboat who may have come ashore. During the night in the land area “DRAKAIOI” were located all ten by EL.AS officers.

The body of the unfortunate man was picked up by an ambulance and taken to the local hospital.

Searches are continuing to locate four missing persons, by a helicopter of the Frontex force, a rescue boat and a patrol vehicle of the Coast Guard.

It is noted that the winds in the area are blowing north at 3-4 Beaufort.
