Journalist Paul Mason’s new documentary “This is a Coup” gives a telling look at the days leading to the July 5 referendum in Greece. Exclusive live coverage of behind-the-scenes developments in the Greek government show that the Greek bank holiday was not as surprising a development as it seemed at the time.

 

Former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis had told Mason that EU institutions would have forced this development as early as June 21, 2015. At the time, Mason had asked him if he was ready for such an event, to which Varoufakis said: “Of course not. Nobody is ever ready for Armageddon.”
Suspicion turned to reality soon after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called for a referendum on June 26 as Greece and its EU partners were unable to break the deadlock and the rest is history…
