Tsakalotos: Greece had to compromise to reach an agreement

He said that for the first time all partners recognized the debt is not sustainable

In a press conference on Eurogroup’s results Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos emphasized that it is undisputed that the program review has concluded and that the 10.3 billion euros tranche will be disbursed.

He also focused on the debt issue explaining that for the first time all partners recognized the debt is not sustainable. Mr. Tsakalotos stressed that in the framework of the Greek debt relief, there will be a reduction in interest rates, while he was confident that Greece will soon be included in ECB’s quantitative easing program.

He did not deny, though, that Greece had to make compromises in order to reach an agreement.

“The Eurogroup decision has compromises. We didn’t do what we could have done, obviously we also compromised. But the people will see that the conditions are in place to change the vicious circle into a virtuous circle,” Mr. Tsakalotos said.

Asked about the capital controls, he said lifting them will depend on the return of bank deposits and assurance that banks are fully secured.
