Women’s Day: Two young women, two different worlds

Women are important but what they do is even more

Today is Women’s Day and the females are celebrated for their central role in our society. Sometimes a sense of perspective and comparison can really make us think a little more and become grounded in reality. Kylie Jenner, who has become somewhat of a social media ‘icon’ for many young girls around the globe turned 18 in 2015 and celebrated her birthday, as every young lady loves to do when officially entering adulthood. Another young lady far from the glitz and wealth of the ‘west’, named Malala Yousafazi also turned 18 last year. They both received gifts of different value and significance. Kylie got a new Ferrari, while Malala received a Nobel Prize for her human rights activism and promoting female education and equal rights in Pakistan. At the age of 15 young Malala was shot three times at close range to the head by Taliban Islamist militia men who gvot on her school bus. She managed to survive the attack and underwent reconstructive surgery. In 2013 she received the Sakharov Prize, while Time magazine listed her as one of the 100 most influential women in its 3 consecutive years (2013, 2014 and 2015). It is important to consider the role models young people are being presented with, and especially on a day that celebrates women it is always a good reminder to recognize those women that are truly fighting for universal principles.
