Doctors at a hospital in Rethymno, Crete continue to be mystified by the unexplained death of a three-year-old girl after an autopsy failed to shed light on the cause of death. In statements to the ANA-MPA on Saturday, the head of the hospital’s Medical Service Spyros Mikroulis said that the girl’s condition had deteriorated rapidly after she was admitted, though tests carried out by the hospital showed nothing to cause concern, resulting in her death just seven hours later.
The girl, from Misiria in Rethymno, had been feeling unwell for a period of about nine days. Though her parents repeatedly visited doctors and eventually took her to hospital, no one was able to find anything wrong. In the last 48 hours before her death, her symptoms became more acute and included vomiting and diarrhoea, leading doctors to treat for gastroenteritis. All efforts at treatment proved ineffective, however, and eventually the girl lost consciousness and finally died.
The coroner is now awaiting the results of laboratory tests that may shed light on the mysterious death, while doctors are also considering microbial meningitis, though there have not been reports of the specific ailment in the area.
