Upcoming young tennis player Nick (Nicholas) Kyrgios of Australia – nicknamed “Nick, the Greek” – is taking the tennis world by storm. He worked his magic once again last night when he reached the quarter-finals in his Wimbledon debut by blowing the stunned World Number 1, Rafael Nadal, off Center Court in just four sets (7-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3).
The young wildcard said, after his win, that he didn’t notice the crowd and just went on to play incredible tennis! “It still hasn’t hit me what I’ve done,” he said as his international ranking zoomed from 144 to 68.
“We’re watching a young boy turn into a man,” said John McEnroe. “We have a new star on our hands in the tennis world.”
This isn’t the first time that “Nick, the Greek” has shocked the tennis world. Just nineteen years of age, the former world junior number 1 champion made tennis history last year when he became the fourth youngest winner of an ATP Challenger title when he won the Sydney International. This sent his ranking rocketing to 330 on the ATP list. Later he backed up his success on the Challenger circuit by playing 3 Futures events in China, even winning the last event of the tournament.
On his Twitter account he describes himself as a “proud Greek Malaysian Australian professional tennis player from Canberra”. The young tennis star was born to parents George, who is Greek, and mother Norlaila, who is from Indonesia. Away from courts, he enjoys being with his family and friends and watching and playing basketball.
He says that his mother forced him to play tennis when he was seven and he didn’t enjoy it at the time. Nonetheless, its a decision he hasn’t regretted.
