Limassol acquires its own “Walk of Fame”

Any shining Cypriot star can be inducted into the "Walk of Fame" through an online process

Newsroom July 3 11:24

Limassol on Cyprus has its own Cyprus Walk of Fame. Each year, a committee will review nominees who will be selected through an online voting system for induction to the walk of fame. The star design for the venture has already been unveiled in a special ceremony.

Nominees need to be born in Cyprus or have spent their formative or creative years on the island. They also need to have a body of of work that has had a national or international impact on Cyprus heritage. Nominees will be evaluated by a 9-membered committee that will include five members from the Municipal Council of Limassol.

Mayor of Limassol Andreas Christou said that the goal is to promote people from the world of art and culture, sports, social welfare, science and business innovation. He stressed that it isn’t a copy of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, but more like similar initiatives that have been taken in over 50 countries including Germany and Israel. Other countries that have “Walk of Fame” projects include Russia, Ukraine, Canada and the U.S.A.

At present there are five people already nominated for Cyprus: Igor Vartchenko (Arts & Entertainment category), Roman Starikovich (Agriculture, Business & Industry), Marcos Baghdatis (Sport & Recreation), Violeta Cacomanoli (Arts & Entertainment), and Andreas Pantzis (Arts & Entertainment).

A group of Limassol residents started an online petition to cancel the initiative in the old town center as they were worried that it would ruin the appearance. However, both the mayor and the organizers insist that the stars and their placement will respect the architecture of the place.

The project is organized by “Cyprus Walk of Fame” and will have no financial cost for the municipality.
