Ebola risk: Greece advises travelers to avoid West Africa

Greece warned its citizens on Wednesday to avoid non-essential travel to Guinea, Libea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria after almost 900 people in West Africa had been killed by the Ebola virus in West Africa. The country also said it would take “precautionary measures” at ports and other entry points to monitor people coming into the country, said the Greek Health Ministry.

Health Ministry officials decided to make this recommendation after meeting with the Hellenic Center of Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) on Tuesday. Greeks who do travel to West Africa are advised to seek advice on disease prevention.

Though Greece is a major gateway for migrants from Africa and Asia wishing to go to the EU, the number of people arriving from affected countries was miniscule. “Our country has a low level of risk in terms of the virus entering the country, but it is deemed appropriate to issue strict travel instructions to the public and to boost the level of preparedness at the entry gates to the country,” said the ministry’s announcement.

Greece is just the latest among countries advising travelers to cancel trips to countries affected by the virus. Other countries that have issued warnings include the U.S., Germany and France.
