According to the Greek newspaper “Ta Nea” the government is looking to change the law, so that those who owe to the IRS will not automatically considered to be tax evaders and will not be prosecuted. The new plan for changing the criminal sanctions will be submitted in September.

Of the total 67.5 billion euro debt which is payable to the State, 50 should be written off according to a tax force relevant report.

It is worth noting that Greece is the only EU country which applies the system of arrests for debts to the IRS. In 2013 the financial police arrested 3,072 people for public debts that reached 10 billion euros, while the first half of 2014 only 717.
