Voters in Oregon and District of Columbia said “yes” to the legalization of marijuana use, in polls that were conducted on the sidelines of the national mid-term elections, on issues ranging from gay marriage to abortion.

More specifically, according to the results that have been announced so far, Washington, D.C. approved the measure by 65% in favor and 28% against, while Oregon passed by 54% to 46%.

This development comes two years after Colorado and Washington led the way in legalizing cannabis for recreational use.

“More and more people are realizing that it makes sense to choose licensed, regulated, and taxed marijuana businesses over the drug cartels,” said Mike Elliott, head of the Colorado-based Marijuana Industry Group.
