SDOE uncovers widespread tax evasion

Greece's Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) found that the Greek state is losing huge amounts of revenue after its investigation into tax evasion

Tax evasion still hounds the Greek economy with Greek Imerisia newspaper placing the turnover from tax evasion and undeclared trade at around 2 billion euros. Tax evasion Greeks are startling with a recent report by Stephen Hall, an adviser of the Bank of Greece, finding that two out of three Greek employees declaring less figures than their actual income.

Greece’s Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) conducted investigations into sudden unjustified increases to the assets of doctors, lawyers, farmers and more and found that there were over 30 million euros worth of undeclared funds.

There were 38 cases of transfers worth over 5 million euros and another 15 with amounts over 1 million euros that were sent overseas by people who declared no income. In 18 cases, amounts worth over 1 million euros were sent by people who were receiving unemployment benefits. There were millions of euros found in different accounts as well as dodgy transfers that could not be justified.

Some examples:

* A contractor of Albanian descent sent 1.5 million euros to Tirana but could not justify where he received this money. SDOE believes that the Albanian mafia or a gambling conspiracy could be hidden behind this large amount.

* Surgeon oncologist has an upmarket Kolonaki practice from which he didn’t declare 6.8 million euros that he took from visiting patients from 2012-2014.

* A gynaecologist on Crete was found to not have declared 680,000.

* Paediatrician and gynaecologist in Thessaloniki hid over 2 million euros of money they earned.

* Four university doctors from Thessaloniki received 1 million euros from the public sector for research programs. They did not declare this amount.
