Greek tourism and climate change

A study by the Bank of Greece suggests that climate change will take a toll on Greek tourism

Newsroom November 9 01:02

An online report published by the Bank of Greece, titled “Greek tourism and climate change: Adaptation policies and strategic development”, states that Greek tourism needs to implement strategies to deal with climate change. Findings of the report state that the stifling weather conditions and high temperatures are likely to increase by 20% during the months from July to September, the peak of Greek tourism. Coastal areas and the islands are particularly at risk due to rising sea levels.

The experts suggest that there needs to be a development of alternative forms of tourism and a revision of the tourist season to enhance the tourist product, improve services and focus on intensive rather than short-term development.

Key measures that need to be followed include strengthening entrepreneurship, developing and improving infrastructure, gaining more knowhow and skills, doing away with seasonality, providing all areas of the country with development opportunities and organizing structured activities depending on destination-specific potential.
