Commemoration of Polytechnic anniversary begins with scuffles (photos + videos)

Students broke the door and occupied the administration building of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on Friday morning while scuffles were noted in Athens on Thursday

Scuffles broke out between university students and the police on Thursday night when around fifty students tried to break the lock in order to enter the Athens Polytechnic University in order to hold a general assembly meeting. Students were rebuffed by the police.

Tear gas and other chemicals were used to disperse the students.

Outside Athens Law School, around 30 youths threw rocks at the riot police that responded with flashbangs.

Student unions merged during a march on Patission Avenue at 5.30 p.m. in the afternoon to commeorate the student revolt of November 17, 1973, that led to the downfall of the Greek dictatorship. 1,500-2,000 students gathered in the rally, shouting slogans such as “Get police out of universities” and “The Riot Squad hits students.”

They charged that riot police had made extensive use of chemicals, flashbangs and violence on those trying to get in the university.
