In his address at an event on December 15 honoring the 110th anniversary of the birth of Xenophon Zolotas, Bank of Greece (BoG) governor Yannis Stournaras urged the members of the Greek parliament to weigh their decision carefully at the forthcoming presidential elections.
More specifically, Mr. Stournaras underlined that the crisis the country is currently facing is becoming serious and that liquidity in the market is being rapidly reduced. Moreover, the BoG governor said that the country’s economy is in great danger of exiting its growth trajectory and being irrevocably damaged.
Mr. Stournaras also urged the Greek deputies to take into consideration this great and immediate danger in their decisions, underlying that he was well aware of the tremendous weight that Greek deputies had to shoulder.
The statements of Mr. Stournaras have caused serious concern in the higher administrative mechanisms of the Greek banks. So far there is controlled bank withdrawal activity from medium and small depositors. However, the increasing concern of the depositors manifested in their persistent questions reveals that the risk of a bank run is very high.
