25-year-old Romanian Stephan S. was arrested on Monday at Victoria’s Square in Athens for the murder of famous Greek writer Menis Koumandareas. He broke down and confessed, hours into his interrogation, that he was the man who was in the writer’s Kypseli home in the fateful night when the famous author met his death. The perpetrator says that both men got into a heated argument and he pushed the author who fell and met his tragic death. Police are currently looking for a second perpetrator involved in the crime.

Homicide detectives had created a list with people that the 83-year-old writer had been meeting over the recent months and had sifted through this meticulously in order to find the person who had strangled the writer in his own flat on December 5, 2014. After the interrogation of dozens of people, the police focused on two people from Romania that had dealings with Mr. Koumandareas. So far, it appears that robbery was the motive for the crime.

The perpetrator, known as Stephan S, said that he and another young man from Romania had got into an argument with Mr. Koumandareas, though he did not specify what the argument had been about. Mr. Koumandareas was pushed, lost his balance and fell.  This version, however, doesn’t explain the coroners’ findings of strangulation as being the cause of death.

The police know the identity of the second perpetrator but haven’t located him yet.
