The earthquake was of short duration but intense. The Geodynamic Institute initially pointed to the focal point at Galatsi, 10 km northeast of Athens, and first indications showed that the earthquake was just 3.3R on the scale though the tremor was strong due to its depth at 5 km. Later, the quake was found to be near the OAKA stadium.
Though small, the earthquake was felt at many areas around Athens without any information concerning damage or injuries.
Geologist Efthymios Lekkas says that the fault line where the earthquake took place was known from previous earthquakes, though officials at the Geodynamic Institute claim surprise that an earthquake was noted in this area.
Students in the northern suburbs were kept out of school for two hours for precautionary reasons. Citizens are warned to be on alert for a pending earthquake following the activity on Friday morning.
Earlier, Mr. Lekkas had put the size of the tremor at 3.8R with the epicenter at the northern suburb of Pallini.
