A new solo exhibition of talented Greek artist Fikos, entitled “Fallen Angels”, opened earlier this month at the Galo Art Gallery in Turin, Italy, and is scheduled to run until Feb. 28.
The 28-year-old Fikos’ works evoke a Byzantium-influenced style, combining elements of Byzantine iconography with contemporary influences, including street art, to produce highly original works of art.
According to the gallery’s official site, “Fallen Angels” by Fikos is a theme chosen by the artist, which is a visual reflection of a difficult period.
Angels, as he explains, help you get through hard times and at the same time make you realize that the fall is actually a useful experience as long as you make something out of it, and use it to discover something about yourself. The original art works made exclusively for this show in the Galo Art Gallery are painted with eggtempera, ink, and gold leaves on canvas or cotton paper.
The artist’s technique derives from his fascination with Byzantine art from a very young age and his time spent as a graffiti artist and iconographer. He perfected his technique of Contemporary Byzantine painting during his studies at the association for the study of Byzantine iconography “Eikonourgia”, from which he graduated in 2007.
Since then his work can be seen on large scale murals around the world. The themes of his murals emanate from the Orthodox Christian tradition and ancient Greek mythology respectively and they are related to the places where they are presented, but also didactic.
Besides Greece, his work has been exhibited in France, Bulgaria, the UK, Ireland, Ukraine, Austria, Lithuania, Switzerland, Norway and Mexico, in exhibitions and museums, television and radio and in private and public places.
