Ukraine: At least 20 killed in Mariupol missile attack

Mariupol authorities and police said rebels targeted residential areas in the city.

Newsroom January 24 06:39

At least 20 people, including children, have died during a missile attack in the east Ukrainian city of Mariupol on Saturday, according to international media reports.

Ukraine’s interior ministry confirmed the incident earlier in the day and blamed the attack on pro-Russian separatists and the Russian army. Based on the same announcement, more than 70 people have been injured.

Mariupol authorities and police said rebels fired rockets from long-range GRAD missile systems, targeting residential areas in the city. However, Interfax reports that rebels had denied the attack.

It should be noted that, according to AFP, the death toll of the attack is even higher. “The shelling killed 27 people and wounded more than 90 people,” Oleg Kalinin, a spokesman for the Mariupol mayor’s office, told AFP.
