The German media’s attention on Tuesday was dominated by news of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Monday.

Spiegel: We need to understand each other more

The Greek PM’s visit to Berlin was seen as a fresh approach and show that agreements will be honored, but in actual fact the German Chancellor made no promises said Der Spiegel. The weekly publication focused on how both leaders focused on lowering tones, confirming their intent to cooperate in the EU framework.

The German magazine also focused on Tsipras’ statements that, for the first time, did not blame Germany for the problems in Greece as well as the clear statement that today’s Germany bears no relation to the pain caused by the 3rd Reich. The newspaper points to the Greek side’s willingness to break down stereotypes as neither Greeks are “lazy louts” nor German’s to blame for Greece’s problems.

Süddeutsche Zeitung: Athens Continues to have problems

In its extensive reportage from Berlin and Athens, Süddeutsche Zeitung underlined that the Greek prime minister wanted to meet with Merkel without a clear reforms plan. The newspaper reports that Tsipras may be forced to lift the retirement age and proceed with privatizations. The newspaper refers to internal problems within Greece with a focus on  Alternate Administrative Reform Minister George Katrougalos, Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and a focus on how Tsipras may have bought some Spring weather with him to Berlin whereas in Athens there was rain.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: We need to understand each other better

Frankfurter Allgemeine did not fail to notice that both leaders had dropped their tone. The reportage states that Merkel made it clear that Germany is not an institutional body but a member state of the Eurozone and prompted the Greek government to work with the Eurogroup and the three institutions. The newspaper maintains that Merkel invited Tsipras so that the “war of words” could stop between Greek and German officials. The newspaper states that in the matter of war reparations there was no agreement, though discussions are set to continue when German European Affairs Minister Michael Roth visits Athens.
