Bloomberg’s article, titled “A Murky, Sloppy Muddle: How Greece’s Exit From the Euro Could Happen”, explores three scenarios concerning the future of the country.
A: Grexit Avoided
Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) party will not keep its pre-election promises and will be forced to choose from eurozone expulsion or implementing austerity. Choosing the latter, the government’s days will be numbered but Greece’s membership in the euro area will be secured.
B: Hotel California
Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has in the past likened eurozone entry to the Eagles song “Hotel California” where, “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.” Hence, no compromise would mean to stalled bailout loans and capital controls imposed.A new unity government will ensue with Greece in the euro but a new recession. Or banks will shut down and Greece will have to print a new currency.
C: Catastrophy
A messy default
