Which Greek island has its own miniature desert? (photos + video)

The island boasts a variety of fascinating attractions, including a petrified forest, important archaeological sites, two small lakes, thermal springs and waterfalls

Newsroom April 2 04:53

Limnos, a small island in the northeast Aegean, is the ideal destination for nature lovers, as it offers miles and kilometers of golden sandy beaches, rugged landscapes of volcanic rock and fertile plains.

According to Greek mythology, Limnos was the Olympian god Hephaestus’ favorite place in the mortal world. It was there that the God of Fire, Vulcan in Roman mythology, had set up his forge and taught the locals the art of processing copper.

Nowadays, the island boasts of an impressive capital with traditional alleyways, old stone mansions and an imposing Byzantine-era citadel. Visitors to Limnos can also enjoy a variety of fascinating attractions, including a petrified forest, important archaeological sites, two small lakes, thermal springs, waterfalls and even a pocket-sized version of the … Sahara!

That’s right, you read correctly. Limnos has its own sand dunes, also known as “Pachies Ammoudies”, which are located in an area called Gomati. These grey hills, which are very rare in Greece, are definitely among the most impressive features of the island.
