Officials in Cuba said Monday that there was a general power outage across the country, which has about 11 million people.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines told X that there was a “complete disconnection” of the country’s power grid and said it was conducting an investigation.

The incident, which is not the first but appears to be one of the worst, comes as the energy and economic crisis worsens.

The Associated Press recalls that Cuba’s president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, warned Friday that the island had not received oil for more than three months and that it was running on solar power, natural gas and thermal power plants.

A massive power outage a week ago hit the western side of the island, leaving millions of people without electricity.

Cuba has blamed its problems on the US energy blockade. President Donald Trump even warned in January of imposing tariffs on any country selling or supplying oil to the island.
