German Chancellor Angela Merkel left open a “window” of possibility over talks for war reparations to Greece, simply noting that “we’re carefully dealing with all that we (Germans) caused during the period of National-socialism (Nazism)”.
Her high-profile statement comes after comments by the German president, who said the sensitive issue must be re-examined.
Merkel made the televised statement in a message on the occasion of the 70-year anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe, celebrated on May 8.
Germany must examine the war reparations issue towards Greece deeply, German President Joachim Gauck said in an interview to German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung.
He had recently stated that he did not know of the real scope of the Nazi war crimes in the country before he visited Greece and read about the history of the Axis occupation of the country (1941-44, until 1945 in Crete).
