The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government of Greece is pinning its hopes on the stand of the European Central Bank (ECB) to avert a cash crunch. Top officials met with ECB Chief Mario Draghi who, at this stage, wants to keep Greece afloat. The discussion with Greek Deputy Prime Minister Giannis Dragasakis and Alternate International Economic Relations Minister Euclid Tsakalotos was based on the data at hand, following the European Commission’s negative figures for Greece.
The two sides, according to the ECB, discussed the current situation of the Greek economy and developments in talks taking place in Brussels. Dragasakis described the meeting as “constructive”. He said that “achieving an agreement is a realistic and visible goal, provided that all the institutions act constructively.”
A lot hangs on the balance during the ECB meeting in Frankfurt on Wednesday. The Brussels Group meeting on the government’s tax measures on Wednesday is believed to be crucial. Talks may continue on Friday or Sunday, at the eleventh hour of the Eurogroup meeting on Monday.
