The United States is prepared to work with Greece’s newly re-elected SYRIZA government, including efforts to bring about economic recovery in the recession-plagued country, an unnamed State Department official reportedly said on Monday.
The report was first circulated by a long-time Greek correspondent in Washington, and later disseminated by other media, including a prominent Russian news agency.
“We congratulate SYRIZA on its victory in yesterday’s election, and we look forward to working with the new government,” the State Department official stated. “As the new government begins its work, the United States will continue to support domestic reforms and international efforts to foster Greece’s economic recovery,” was the quote attributed to the State Dept. official
The same media reports had the official explaining that the US interest “has been, and remains, that Greece emerge from its prolonged economic crisis stronger and playing a stabilizing role in the region.”
