Colossus of Rhodes project to restore the giant statue! (vids)

Will the towering Colossus of Rhodes statue rise again?

Newsroom October 29 11:35

The ambitious Colossus of Rhodes project has brought together young professionals from Greece, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom in the hope of reviving one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that had been erected on the Greek island of Rhodes in 280 BC to celebrate the island’s victory of the ruler of CyprusCyprus, Antigonus I Monophthalmus.

At the time, it stood as one of the tallest statues of the ancient world at over 30 meters (around 98 feet) high. In 226BC it was destroyed by an earthquake, but its relics were sold in 654 AD by the Saracens who ransacked the island and sold the remains of the amazing statue.

Now, there are hopes that technology and international collaboration may create the Colossus of Rhodes in modern time.

The primary objective, according to the creator’s statement, is to put back the island of Rhodes back on the map by restoring its historical value. Furthermore, they also hope “to bring out to light the hundreds of archaeological findings forgotten in the storerooms of the island.”

Background

Colossus of Rhodes PROJECT. A European initiative to revive one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This project originates from the ideas, the expectations and the hopes of some young professionals coming from various european countries: Greece, Spain, Italy and United Kingdom. The determined aim is very ambitious: to rebuild the Colossus of Rhodes, the God of Sun, taking into consideration the modern standards. The purpose of the project is not to propose a copy of the original, bronze, 40 meters high structure, but to arouse the same emotions that visitors felt, more than 2200 years ago
