An increase to car excise duties is being examined by the Ministry of Finance. The new rules being considered will charge car duties according to mileage as well as a reduction (but not abolition) of the annual rate that car owners pay.
According to the Alternative Finance Minister Tryfonas Alexiadis who spoke of the changes on morning TV program on Saturday, the changes planned by the ministry for 2016:
– There will be an increase in fuel tax and other taxes aimed at placing more restrictions to car use. This sum will be paid by those who use their cars more frequently or have cars with high engine capacity. Those who have cars with low emissions that they don’t use frequently will pay less.
– Excise duties will decrease. There will be a small relative amount paid annually per car, but it won’t be restrictive.
Alexiadis pledged to lower rates and fuel consumption taxes from current rates but did not give an exact amount.
