Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem on Thursday pointed out that main pension cuts might be needed in order an agreement on social security could be reached.

Speaking at the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, he highlighted that the agreement will also include cuts in pensions.

Answering to a question made by New Democracy’s MEP Giorgos Kyrtsos, he said that the proposals on the social security system concern reforms which will consolidate the system so as to become sustainable.

He also said that all sides are trying to find ways to solve the short-term economic and fiscal issues, while he admitted that there would be cuts but he refused to elaborate on the issue.

Moreover, he said that a sustainable social security system is needed which will not be funded from the state budget.
