The head of Amnesty International Greece, George Kosmopoulos accused the Greek authorities of denying the organisation access to the refugee reception centers and hot spots. Kosmopoulos said he had repeatedly contacted both the Ministry of Defence and Immigration but he was unable to cut through the red tape. He claimed that after his failed attempt to be granted verbal permission he requested formal permission to access the areas via written letters but to no avail. The members of Amnesty International attempted to enter the camps Friday, but were denied access. ‘You can’t block the entry to members of organisations who observe the defence of human rights’, said Kosmopoulos. On its part, the Greek Ministry on Immigration said it had not denied access to the organisation. ‘We were requested by Amnesty International to record video in the camps, but that is something that could cause problems to the cohesion in the centers’, said the Ministry. Meanwhile, the Greek Asylum Forum called on the Greek authorities to dispatch officials to Victoria Square in Athens, where immigrants gather, in order to inform them on which reception centers they will b processed to.
