The Greek government has deemed the refugee Bill as urgent and plans to process it through the relevant Parliamentary committees Thursday. The government wants to have it ready before a Parliamentary Plenum for discussion on Friday. The state general accounting office has estimated the bill will cost burden the Greek state’s annual budget by 110 million Euros. The bill does not recognise Turkey or any other third country as ‘safe counties;’ for refugees. Some provisions included in the bill have caused ‘unease’ among some SYRIZA’s more left leaning MPs, espcially the ’53’ who have expressed concerns that it might violate the Geneva Conventions. Among other things, the bill provides the full incorporation of the revised EU directives regarding common practices pertaining to asylum seekers and the establishment of a general secretariat for refugee reception.
