The port of Chios will remain closed until monday, after the vast majority of the refugees and illegal immigrants occupying the area were unwilling to relocate to the organised hotspot of Souda nearby. The 800 refugees and illegal immigrants had managed to ‘break out’ of the VIAL detention centre until they reached the port on the island where the stayed. According to local news outlet politischios.gr, the decision to close the port facilities was reached in a meeting by local police and political authorities and an MP Saturday, after NGO ’Metadrasi’ and the UNHR only managed to persuade 40 refugees of the 850 at the port to abandon the area.
