Greece’s Alternate Minister for National Defence Dimitris Vitsas admitted that the borders between Greece and its neighbouring countries in the north would not open, in an interview on Mega TV, Thursday morning. Vitsas said he would immediately ask Greece’s EU partners to relocate refugees and migrants from Turkey directly to EU countries, underlining that the situation with the 54,000 refugees in Greece was currently unmanageable. He announced that the Greek government planned to open 5 more refugee reception centres throughout the country, one of which will be at Eleonas. On the issue of the refugee camp at Idomeni he revealed that a group of government officials, accompanied by translators and ethnic community leaders, would visit the area to persuade the people to relocate to other hotspots based on their ethnicities. He dubbed the situation of the blocked off railway tracks at Idomeni ‘very serious’, calling on the refugees to respect the Geneva Conventions that compel people to abide by the law of the country they are being hosted in.
