Anti-EU sentiment rising, Pew research shows

Greeks and Brits want powers returned to national governments

Newsroom June 8 03:59

According to a Pew Research poll, two thirds of Greeks and British believe the power of governance should be returned to national countries from Brussels in the EU. The poll, published 2 few weeks before the Brits go to the ballot boxes to decide if they want their country to remain in the European Union, revealed that an increasing number of Europeans had an unfavourable view of the EU.

The poll was conducted in 10 major EU countries and showed that the majority of those asked were strongly in favour of the UK remaining in the EU28 group, with the Swedes (89%)and Dutch (74%) having the most negative view on a possible Brexit. The most worrying finding for the pro-European camp was the huge drop of the positive views for the EU among Europeans, with France recording a massive 17% drop to 38%. Favourable opinions on the EU also fell in Spain to 47%, while Germany and the UK also had negative opinions on the EU with 50% and 44%, respectively. These drops are considered to be the result of the poor performance of the EU on the refugee crisis and the economy.

Ironically, the countries that have taken a more national-oriented stance on the refugee crisis opposing EU official policy, Poland and Hungary had the highest support rates for the EU with 72% and 61%, respectively.

About 94% Greeks believe the EU handled the refugee crisis incorrectly, while in Sweden the respective percentage stands at 88%. On the matter of dealing with the economy, Greeks (92%), Italians (68%) and French (62%) were displeased with the EU.
