This year, Father’s Day is being celebrated around the world on June 19. Google has created a special doodle to mark the occasion showing a pair of dad’s shoes on a rug with the word Google on it, accompanied with a pair of kids shoes.
Each year, the day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June to recognise the contribution that fathers make to the lives of their children.
There are many stories about where and when Father’s Day originated, but the most popular is about a girl called Sonora Dodd of Spokane lived in Washington. Sonora and her siblings were raised by a single father William Jackson Smart and back in May 1909, she was listening to a church sermon on Mother’s Day. It was then when probably the idea of having a day for dad and especially hers struck her.
The next year, she wanted to celebrate the day on June 5, which was her father’s birthday, as Father’s Day and petitioned for the holiday to be rcecognised by the city. However, since the process took some time, the first Father’s Day was officially celebrated on June 19, 1910.
