Greek Deputy Defence Minister Dimitris Vitsas said Turkey’s claim for extraditing the 8 rebel military men that landed in Greece on Saturday requesting political asylum was very strong. Speaking to Mega channel station, Dritsas said that the 8 men had attempted to illegally topple the democratically elected Turkish by a coup and therefore the Turkish argument that they should be sent back to Turkey to stand trial was well-founded. The 8 men had landed at the Alexandoupoli airport in northern Greece, Saturday in a black hawk military helicopter after a military coup carried out by a faction of the Turkish army was swiftly suppressed by forces and citizens loyal to President Tayyip Erdogan. The men were charged by Greek authorities with illegal entry into Greece and their application for political asylum will be examined by Greece according to international law. People are allowed to ask and receive political asylum under international provisions, if they fear their lives could be endangered. Turkish politicians are openly talking of reinstating the death penalty after the failed coup. Turkey had demanded their immediate extradition by Greece.
