At the annual Transport Ticketing & Passenger Information conference that took place over the past weekend in London, Athens Urban Transport (O.A.S.A.) received a global award for its TfA tickets application, which allows passengers to purchase bus passes on the go.
In the words of the judges, “Transport for Athens has introduced an all-around fantastic transport solution for the city in partnership with Masabi. As the first multi-modal mobile ticketing programme accessible in a capital city, the scale of this project and the popularity with customers are extremely impressive.”
Grigoris Dimitriadis, the president of Athens Urban Transport at the time the application was first released, described the app to be secure, transparent and reliable, setting a world-class example.
According to Athens Urban Transport, it will be transitioning from paper tickets to modern electronic tickets in 2017 with the use of plastic smartcards, which are similar to London’s Oyster cards.
