4 refugees dead in hotspots in one week due to poor living conditions

Immigration Minister says causes of deaths will be looked into

Newsroom January 31 09:26

A total of four refugees have died in hotspots in the eastern islands of the Aegean Sea over the past week due to lack of proper infrastructures and poor living conditions. Three people lost their lives in the Moria refugee camp from the poisonous fumes as they attempted to keep warm in the freezing conditions in their tent by lighting a brazier. On January 24 an Egyptian man died of fumes after trying to keep warm in his shanty tent at the Moria hotspot, while a 46-year-old from Syria, also lost his life for the same reason. It was revealed that a 20-year-old man at the hotspot in Samos of Iraqi origin also died under similar circumstances. The Moria hotspot currently hosts 4,891 refugees and migrants with a full-capacity of 3,500, while the Samos facilities is also overcrowded hosting 1,800 people with the ability to hold only 850. Minister for Immigration Giannis Mouzalas said the causes of the tragic deaths must be investigated and render the living conditions more liveable.
