Serbian tennis champion Novak Djokovic overcame Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets (6-3, 7-6, 6-3) in a three-hour, 15-minute clash in New York last night for a third career US Open title.
Djokovic’s second successive Grand Slam triumph of the season after Wimbledon takes him to 14 career major titles to draw level with Pete Sampras, only behind 17-time champion Nadal and Federer, on 20.
In the ATP rankings, Djokovic is now just 455 points behind Swiss legend Federer in second and 2,315 off of Nadal – with a very possible chance he could end the year on top of the pile for the fifth time in his career.
At the end of the match, the Serbian player repeated his funny moment with actor Gerard Butler, who was in the stands, when they both yelled: “This is Sparta”.
