The festive period offers many opportunities for an escape to Greece’s winter resorts. And one you’ll come across more often than the rest in a search is Palaios Agios Athanasios in Macedonia, which has even been called “Austria of Northern Greece”.
However, even though it’s one of the most publicised destinations, at the same time it’s somewhat misunderstood. There are many who think that in order to go there you need to be a ski aficionado, due to the famous ski centre of Kaimaktsalan. But the village has many more things for you to do and thus it’s guaranteed that you won’t get bored if you visit during the holidays.
Palaios Agios Athanasios is in Pella, very close to the borders with North Macedonia. It’s 123 km from Thessaloniki, and 28 km from Edessa and has a long history since it was founded in the 16th century. It’s built at an altitude of 1200 m on the mountain Voras, the third tallest in Greece. Its highest peak is Kaimaktsalan, which means “Earth Soft as Cream”.
