Ouzo taverns –known as ouzeris– are one of the favourite meeting places in Greece, tightly associated with Greek culture. They are disarmingly simple, with impressive delicacies, and they offer relaxation in a laidback atmosphere.
Delicious meze of all sorts – spreads, salads, meats, casserole dishes, fish, and seafood – accompany your ouzo or tsipouro (traditional pomace raki). Great food and a friendly atmosphere promise pleasant moments.
So, we’ll take a tour of the galleries, squares, and hidden alleys in the centre of town, from the neighbourhood of Koukaki to that of Kipseli, to Galatsi, and even as far as Perama, to recommend the ouzo taverns that stood out for their tasty food and their great atmosphere.
Tsipouradiko tou Lolou
In one of the hippest neighbourhoods of Athens, in Koukaki, you’ll find Tsipouradiko tou Lolou. With a history of over 60 years, it’s a tavern with regulars of all ages and from all cultures, who all love great food and a laidback atmosphere. This place will win you over at first sight. The tables on the verdant pedestrian street make you feel like you’re in the country, while inside, the wooden chairs and the stills from favourite movies of Old Greek cinema bring to mind a coffee shop from the past. The setting is completed by the cheerfulness and hospitality of the owners (Nikos and Thanasis) and of the rest of the staff.
